The material foundations of operations

Military operations depend on food, fuel, ammunition, transport and medical support. Logistics is not separate from strategy: the ability to sustain a force shapes what that force can attempt.

Reading campaigns through supply

When examining a campaign, consider distances, transport networks and maintenance requirements alongside battlefield decisions. A map can reveal the constraints that a narrative focused only on commanders may miss.

Avoiding simple lessons

Lessons from one theatre cannot automatically be transferred to another. Geography, available industry and coalition arrangements all matter when comparing logistical systems.
